Concept

hi! I think the concept from class that I thought was the most helpful was the adapting to your audience concept. I say this because this concept allowed me to fully understand what I should look for when planning a speech. Would I really want to talk about a certain subject if it is going to affect the way the audience responds? There are many diverse background and a speaker needs to take that to account, you can't speak about certain subjects if it is not appropriate, in otherwords, some people might not find it that enjoyable, so one needs to find a topic or choose a side that isn't offensive. In addition, I also like the concept about facts and statistics. When one includes facts and statistics, the audience has more reason to believe the speaker and be for their argument, instead of against, especially when it comes to a persuasive essay! -Jeter!

Evaluation!

Hi there! Well, I think I semi-sort of achieve the purpose of my speech. To explain, I was prepared for my speech, but I didn’t really quite get it across to my audience, at least I don’t think so. I felt sort of comfortable, but not all that much. I say this because I noticed in the video that I kept on touching my hair and was kind of fidgeting every so often. I felt somewhat confident at first, only because the professor had told us to take 3 deep breaths before beginning our speech, I felt that, that really helped me out, helped everyone out actually. Of course this excersise was going to help, it is also included in the speech Evolving Art book.

If I had to do the persuasive speech over again, I would have to practice a bit more. I did practice enough, so I think, I think that the problem was that I was trying to persuade an audience. I truly think that it is much harder to persuade an audience to do something, than to inform them of something.

Again, what I did that was distracting was the whole thing with my hair. I kept touching it every so often and I know I would have thought that would have been quite distracting if I were the one listening to one speak.

In this speech, what was different was the way I tried to persuade people. In my last speech, I was not trying to persuade anyone to do anything, I was simply informing them. In my final speech, I was trying to get people to do a certain thing. I gave example of athletes and proposed a solution and a visualization to what would happen if athletes were to continue doing what they are doing.

From a scale form 1-10, I would rate my eye contact a 6. I say a 6 because sure, I would look at the audience every now and then, but I would also look at the notecards. In my second speech, however, I know for a fact that I only looked at my speech cards for a little, not as much as I did for my final speech.

On a scale from A-F, I think I would give myself a C for a grade. I say this because, it was not the worst speech ever, but it was also not the best speech ever. A “B” is considered “average”, and a “C” is considered “average.” I believe that my speech was average, it was not a wow speech, but nor was it a whatever speech!

In this speech, I mentioned I believe one source citation. I should have added more, but I couldn’t really find a way to add them into the presentation.

Based on all three speeches, I know for a fact that I did way better on my second speech, the informative speech. I say this because I seemed to have been way more prepared and also because I did not really have to look down at my notecards because I knew much of the material. :)

Future Endeavors.

Hi there!!
Well..what I am going to be taking from this class which I think will be helpful in the future will be the skills that I learned in public speaking this semester! I learned a lot of things, from
tips that help a person relax when speaking to an audience, (like how the professor told us to break in and out, take 3 deep breaths) making eye contact, keeping your speech at a steady pace, to observe what kind of audience you have, the different ethnicities and ideas of people so to speak. These are all very important and will allow one to have good future speeches. I want to become a high school english teacher so I am pretty sure that I will need good speaking skills because I will be speaking to a large group of students 5 days a week for years. I really think this class will help me in my career and will allow me to have better communication with my students. :)

Favorite Speech

My favorite speech was the informative speech. I say this because I think I knew a lot about my topic. I mean, I knew the information from my other topics, but I guess my informative speech was close to heart. In other words, I was really into the topic because it affects everyone and it has affected me. My topic was the complexity of student aid so it was fun finding facts about the topic. I believe that the more interested one is in a topic, then the better the speaker's speech will come out much better then it would if one were to not be interested in their topic. :)

Speech Buddy Videos

Hi!
The speech buddy videos that needed to be watched for this week had to do with home schooling. The pros and cons of this subject were talked about in the videos. In the con part of it,Robert uses evidence to make it clear on what side he is on, whether he is for, or against home schooling. If you want to get something clear and out to the audience, then you really want to have evidence and good supporting material so that they know what position you are taking. In the Pro video, Dixie uses reasoning, claims, and evidence which in return allows the audience to know where she stands and choose a side.

Chapter 15 Concept

Hi!
The concept from chapter 15 of the speech book I found to be the most interesting and informative was the "Using REasoning Effectively" section. To start off, well the section describes the four types of reasonings that there are. The four types of reasoning are: deductive, inductive, casual, and analogical. I found this section to be even more helpful because there is somewhat of a chart in the book and it gives a "brief description" of the type of reasoning, it's "strengths," and it's "weaknesses." If one were to read them then they will know how the reasoning is most useful and what the risks are if you use it the wrong way. Reasoning,as stated in the book, is the method or process speakers use to link their evidence and claims. Reasoning allows the speaker to try and get the audience to accept his or her evidence which will later let them accept it as support for the claim the speaker is talking about.

-Persuasion -->nicotine.

Hi!
Well okay, I'm trying to go back in time to think of a time when I tried to persuade someone to do something. I tried and am trying to get my boyfriend to quit smoking. He isn't necessarily addicted to the stuff, at least I don't think he is, but he does it every so often, and I wanted/want him to stop. I had learned about nicotine in my bio class about a month ago and so I had an abundance of facts, simple yet effective facts which will make a person think twice. I used the notes from class, I memorized everything there was to know about cigarettes, and I told him all about it. I told him all about the risks of cancer in almost every part of the body, how it affects the teeth, all that bad stuff. I think it was somewhat effective because he kind of looked at me kind of with this disgusted face, he had already known of some of the effects, but I went way deeper. He really has cut down on them, which is a really good thing. :)

Concept

The concept that I personally found the most useful and interesting was the section about persuading different types of audiences. The types of audiences are: divided, uniformed, apatheric, negative, and positive. Each of these audiences can be described in a different way. For example, a divided audience can be described as half of the audience being favorable towards something, and the other half being unfavorable; hence, the term “divided.” An apathetic audience is exactly what apathetic means! Apathetic means “showing or feeling no interest.” The audience has no such interest in the topic so the speaker has to really try and get their attention and get them interested in it. A positive audience holds a favorable view, it’s atmosphere is very positive, easy to go along with. A negative audience is the opposite of a positive audience, it holds an unfavorable view, against the topic so to speak. Lastly is the uniformed audience. The uniformed audience is an audience with no such opinion. In this occasion, the audience can try and persuade their audience by using repetition and something called redundancy. Redundancy , as you may or may not know, means the state of being no longer needed or useful. So in this case, lets say the speaker is trying to get the audience to put a stop to something because it is not useful. Well this section was super useful because now I know what types of audiences are out there and will plan my speech a whole lot better. :)

-Jeter!

Sea of Persuasion

Hiiii!! :)

I think that everyone is surrounded by a huge sea of persuasion almost every single minute of their lives, whether it be online ads, websites, magazines in a gas station, television commercials, etc. Your own friends and family can persuade you to do something. For example, they can persuade you from something like to stop smoking to something like telling you to buy this or that. You can see people around campus at SJSU handing out papers for events or even hear people yelling stuff out. For example, the other day I was walking and I heard this girl say something outloud, something about donating your used prom dress to give them to students from the bay area that cannot afford one this year. All of this sea of persuasion can either persuade you to do something good and that is necessary or make you do something that is unnecessary and not needed. One can be a more critical consumer by simply saying no to some ads. You don’t need to buy the pair of latest shoes, clothes, etc. that is a choice, but not necessarily a necessity. One just has to think about what is a necessity.

Next Speech! (actuative)

hi there!!
Well my main points for my next speech, the actuative speech are the following: The
negative effects of the use of steroids and how we should get rid of them, the satisfaction of fans with steroid users (athletes) , and how society is affected by steroid users. I will be including the "need", the "satisfaction", and the "visualization." For my first point, the negative effects of the use of steroids,I will talk about the need for getting rid of steroids. For my second main point, I will be talking about the satisfaction of getting steroid users, in this case athletes to not use steroids; hence, fans will be satisfied with athletes outcomes. Lastly, for the visualization part, I will be talking about how society will look down upon steroid users (in this case, athletes) if they continue to do so.

Chapter 12 Concept

Hiiiiii! :)
So for this blog I wanted to write about the concept about managing one's voice during a speech. I felt that this one was very pivotal, especially for me! While reading, I came along some points. When making a speech, one should never, I mean never, speak in monotone because it will most likely get the audience bored and space out. One never wants to speak to low or too high, too low will make the audience have to try and figure out what the heck someone is saying, and they shouldn't even have to try, they should just be able to listen perfectly. Likewise, one should not be squirming in their seat because the speaker is speaking too loud, that is no good. Lastly, one should most definitely not use fillers, because that just makes the audience think that the speaker has nothing else to say, trust me, been there, done that. :)

F L I C K R.

Hi hi hi. :)
I thought it was quite fun reading other people's comments on a discussion about sexist language on Flickr. I personally do not find anything wrong with calling a person a woman, man, girl, boy, child, etc. Then again, you should use those words cautiously. For example, I wouldn't call a man a boy if you can obviously tell that the man is a man. Sometimes I'l call my friends "kids," and I don't necessarily mean it, some of them ask, "kid?" and I just start laughing and say that I say that to a lot of people, its just a common word I use towards friends. Just as stated in the book, a certain gender can look at a phrase differently from the opposite sex. Not all people care for the language when it comes to sexist language. If the language were to involve something that the person were to truly care about, well then, thats something different.

Speech Buddies!

While watching the videos for this week, I learned several things which I think I can incorporate with my next speech. In one of the videos, Erin talks about the correct way to use language in your speech so that it can be effective for the audience. Anthony speaks about involving the audience with your language, in other words, engaging the audience with language. He gives a good amount of pronouns which if said, will allow the audience to feel a tad bit more connected with one's speech. One can start out their attention getter with humor, but just do it the correct way so that no one gets offended. You do not always want to speak so low, you want to change it up a bit, that way, the audience will not get bored and will pay more attention. I guess for my next video I will try to change my tone and try to get my speech more connected with the audience.

Self Evauluation

Hey there!

Well my informational speech was about the Complexity of Student Aid. I think I was able to achieve the purpose of my speech. The purpose of my speech was to inform the audience about the complexity of student aid, and I think I did just that. I believe that I did much more better for this past speech then in the first speech. For this second speech, I felt a whole lot more confident and was not as nervous.
For this speech, I noticed that I did not have to look all that much at my notecards, I'm guessing this is so because I practiced so much this time around. Also because I payed attention to the chapters from the speech book. The book gives a lot of tips on how to relax yourself and let you not be as nervous for future speeches. I think next time I need to try and not look at the media, in this case, the powerpoint as much, because it distracts me and it seems as though I am ignoring the audience which is something that I do not want to do. Even though this time around I did not have to look at my notecards as much, I still did, and I think this happened because instead of writing little bullets with one or two word phrases, I wrote out some of the stuff. If I keep writing phrases on the notecards, then I will more then likely tend to look down and read from there, but in this speech, I sort of stopped myself, or at least, tried to stop myself from doing so.
At one point, I had to read from the notecards to pronounce the name of a book that I used as one of my sources, I think I only said one source,I had 3 other sources but I forgot to say them. I tried not to use fillers, it's very difficult because I don't really think a person realizes they are using fillers, at least I know I don't, I use them all the time and I don't even realize it.
For my next speech, I plan to practice more, because of course, "Practice makes perfect."
or so I think. I am going to try and not memorize so many things because I do not want my speech to sound as if I was rehearsing a script. I want it to come out more smoothly.
On my next speech, I plan to have somewhat better transitions and give more closure to the conclusion, not just keep it short. I am also going to try and relax a bit more because I tend to move around a whole lot without even noticing it.

In sum, I think that this past speech was much, much more better then my last, and I think it was because I practiced several times this time. I also practiced in front of a group of my friends, and I believe that helped out a lot. For this speech, I think I'd give myself maybe a B-, it was good, but not the best, and I know I can do better then that. :)
I was really proud of myself because I made it within 5-6 minutes!

Chapter 11 concept

The most useful concept I found was the "Practice With Your Media," concept and the "Speak To Your Audience,Not Your Media," concept. I think these are extremely important because I tend to look at the screen or at my cars. You must improvise incase something goes wrong with the technology. For example, you can always use a chalkboard/white board and when presenting by using a visual such as a powerpoint, one should always bring backup, such as overhead transparencies with key images or graphics as stated in the book. When looking too much at your media, the audience feels ignored, and that is a bad feeling. They may feel as if they should ignore the speech since the speaker seems to not be paying attention to them. I found these two concepts the most important and most useful because I sometimes have problems focusing to much on my media.

Components

The components that go into an introduction of a speech are the following things: attention getter, purpose, thesis, establishing credibility, and a preview of the main points one is going to be speaking about. I took notice that all of these elements are used in our speech outline examples as well, it all makes sense. By including an attention getter, the speaker will do exactly what it says, get the attention of people, in this case, the audience. For my speech, my attention getter is going to be, "How many of you have filled out a FAFSA before?" For those who have and for those who havn't, well I think it will grab their attention because they might feel anxious towards the subject, or maybe not, I might need to work on it.The purpose of including a purpose and a thesis is for the audience to know what the speaker is going to talk about and why they are going to speak about it. Including your main points in the introduction is very pivotal because you will allow the audience to know about the main things you are going to be talking about, that way they will know from the beginning and not have to guess what your main points are throughout the speech.
The components that go into a conclusion are a review of the main points (the ones used in the introduction, a reinforcement of the purpose, and a closure.

Speech Buddies!

Hey there! Throughout the five videos, I learned a little something about having a good effective introduction as well as an effective conclusion. By having an effective introduction, you catch the audience's attention. When one is doing their introduction, they should first of all, start out with an attention getter, whether it be an interesting fact,a question, etc. Secondly, one must tell the audience the purpose of their speech and give a statement that should be maintained throughout the entire speech, in other words, a thesis. Lastly, one must let the audience know their three main points. Evan does a very good job by giving the audience his main-points which was expressed in his powerpoint. In addition, he starts off his speech with a quote who's purpose is to catch the audiences attention. In order to have an effective conclusion, one must review their main-points, in other words, repeat them back to the audience, reinforce the purpose and have a good concluding sentence for closure. Having both an effective introduction and conclusion will more then likely allow one to have an effective speech. :)

Chapter 7 & 8 Concept

A concept I found useful and interesting was the "Definition by Analogy," section. To explain, as stated in the book, "Speakers often use analogies to help an audience understand something new to them." I like analogies for the simple fact that you can use them in order to get a friend or audience to better understand what you are trying to say. I think this is important because the audience may be totally confused about what the speaker is talking about. If the speaker were to put it in terms that the audience understands, then they will most likely get what the speaker is talking about; hence, being able to get their point more across.

-d.j!

Facts and Statistics

Facts and statistics are most effective when doing a logical appeal. By a logical appeal, I mean an appeal that is the most persuasive,in otherwords, the most convincing. So if you are trying to convince/persuade an audience, facts and statistics are the way to go. The facts and statistics should be made in the beginning or the middle of a speech. You don't ever really want to include too many facts and statistics (even though they are all really interesting) because you will just get the audience to zone out and not pay attention. Just get enough to get your point across and try to persuade the audience.

Chapter 7 and 8 Speech Buddies

I believe that the speech buddy videos for this week really gave me a leg up. To explain, I learned a good number of things that will help me on preparing a future speech. In video 7.1, I learned about how different uses of support can help out my speech. The different types of uses I am talking about are the use of support such as statistics, facts, and other sources. Using facts and statistics is very pivotal in speeches because you can really support your idea, in otherwords, the point you are trying to get to the audience. Video 7.2 has to do with the credibility of newspapers, magazines, journals, etc. I read the Spartan Daily everyday, and receive The Californian back at my hometown everyday. I love reading it because despite the opinion column, the newspaper has much credibility,as do journals and some magazines. The videos for chapter 8 were more into the structure of a speech. I learned about some of the patterns which I may consider using for my next speech.

Self Evaluation

Compared to any other speech I have ever done, I'd have to say that our first speech was
a great improvement. I say this because I had been shy almost all of elementary, grade school, and about half of my high school years. In the past, I had gotten super shy and my voice would crack and all that bad stuff. My topic was pinatas and well my purpose was to inform the audience of three things, and I believe I was able to inform them of it, but in a sort of vague way. By vague, I mean unclear. I thought I was comfortable at first, before going up to the front of the class. Once I got up there, tons and tons of things started running through my head, like how people say that a picture can say a thousand words, well all of those words were running through my head. Weird metaphor, but so true. I did not feel confident whatsoever.

If I had to do the entire speech over again, I would work on my preparation way more, and the delivery. I say this because while I was in front of the class, my form of delivery was really bad. I had practiced in front of my roommates, but thats only two people. In terms of content for my next speech,I am going to try and include the citations to be read aloud, that way my speech will have more credibility and people will know where I got the information. In terms of delivery, I am going to try and practice in front of a larger crowd beforehand, and have them criticize me and also let me know whether I move to much, because as shown in the video, I really do. I started feeling confident right at the beginning of the speech, but my confidence decreased by about 80% after the whole, "Marco,Polo!" attention getter.

After watching the video, the first thing I noticed was the attention getter. I think it did catch the audiences attention when saying, "Marco!" and having some members of the audience say "Polo!" I also noticed that right from the start, I kept scanning my notecards which is really bad. In addition, I used many fillers, like "like, umm,"etc. I noticed that I did do some distracting things. To explain, I kept moving a lot which must be really distracting. One thing that I really didn't like was how unconfident I seemed. I would say things like, " umm.yeah.."
Next time I need to sound a whole lot more confident when talking about a topic that I had preparation for. On a scale from 1-10, I would rate my eye contact as a 5. I kept eye contact with the audience at the very beginning, but after a while, my eyes just went onto the notecards. During the course of my speech, I mentioned only one of my source citations. The source citation included the title of the article about the origin of the pinata which I had gotten from the sjlibrary.org website. Next time I need to say four oral citations, not just one. Afterall, oral citations adds credibility to one's speech.

On a scale from A to F, I'd give myself a C-, only because it was our very first speech. If it had been our final speech, however, then I'd have to give myself a D. I say a C- because it was our very first speech for the class, but also because I was very unprepared for the speech. A good speech which would be graded as an A or a B speech would have had the speaker have very good eye contact, and seem confident.

Discussion Week 5.3: Chapter 5 Concept

Hola!
The concept that I found most helpful in chapter 5 was the idea of the audience-speaker connection. As stated in the book, successful speakers view audience members as partners in public speaking. The book also states that, "Speakers succeed only to the degree they effectively connect with their audience.." This means that if a speaker does not connect with their audience, then they have really not succeeded at all. When an audience is listening to a speech, they want to know how what the speaker is talking about relates to them. In my opinion, whenever I hear someone speaking about something that I am really interested in hearing, I tend to listen a whole lot better and pay attention tons more. Audience analyses is a pivotal thing when preparing a speech, you want to know what kind of things interest the audience and not bore them. :)

Discussion Week 5.2: Speech Buddies

Hiiii. :)

While watching the two speech buddy videos, I learned a few things and took some things the speaker's did into consideration. In the first video called "Drinking," by Matthew, he gives many statistics on driving accidents. He uses an overhead for this. The purpose for his speech was to inform students on the danger of drinking to get drunk, and he wants students to become more responsible drinkers. I liked the fact that he chose that topic because that topic can really relate to college students because many of them drink while attending a university. He had a really good attention getter which I'm sure would have caught my attention if I were listening to his speech.

In the second video, "Light Pollution," Courtney does a really good job by stating everything that she is going to talk about, right from the start. She stated what she was going to speak about, light pollution, and she said how she was going to share with the audience the light pollution problems and how if affects us.

From both speaker's, I learned that just like in Courtney's, I should state what I am going to talk about, and from Matthew's, I learned that I should pick a topic that will interest students and use a visual aid.

Discussion Week 5.1: Audience Analysis/Adaptation

Waddup!

While reading chapter 5, I learned the importance of audience analysis and audience adaptation. As you may or may not already know, just as stated in the book, our knowledge about the speaker's audience embarks with audience analysis. This is very important because it can make you or break you on whether or not you do it or not. When one analyzes their audience, they need to figure out what the audience diversity and whether or not they are smiling, have their eyes wandering elsewhere, or simply just looking bored.

One needs to practice beforehand as to how they will respond if they get a reaction that they were not expecting. The speaker has to try to connect and get to know the type of people they will be addressing. This can mean a number of things, including getting to know their familiarity with the speaker's topic, their views on certain subjects, and their interests.

I liked how chapter 5 started off by saying the whole Bill Gates speech and how he would sort of include the name of the school he was speaking at and carefully prepare his speech with the audience in mind. :)

I plan on using audience analysis in my speech by having the audience in mind. To explain,in my informative speech, I will be giving certain examples about the complexity of student aid. I have been seeing some signs across campus talking about student aid and how we need to fight for more. I think I am also going to try and find out how much tuition has increased over the years at Sjsu and in school tuition across California in general.Since we are all in college, I am sure the audience will be interested in it, at least, I'm hoping so. :)

discussion Week 4.3: Chapter 6 Concept

Hey there! Happy Valentines Day to all. :)

Okay, well the concept that I found most useful was the maximizing your search of internet resources. I learned how different keywords produce different things when entering the keywords into a search engine, databases, etc. So we should try and enter different phrases as the keywords, because you might get different information everytime and not find the right information the first time you type something in. It also says how we should search a variety of sources. Just as mentioned in my previous blog, one should go to the library and looks through books, magazines, journals, etc. for information. The library consists of sooo many resources, and the more you know about your speech, the more confident one might be. :)

Happy V-day!

Discussion Week 4.2 Speech Buddies

Hey there! :)
This week while watching the speech buddie videos, I learned some stuff about managing a resource process. I like how the video talked about going to the library to do one's research for it is the perfect place to look for sources because there are so many different books and a plethora of different sources. For example, there are articles, old newspapers, encyclopedias, books, and journals.
The library is a pivotal thing when doing research. By using these resources, you can be pretty sure that they are all worth some credibility. Afterall, one can not really believe anything on the internet now. Knowing everything about your topic and knowing that your sources are credible will make me feel a whole lot more comfortable speaking in front of people. To explain, I won't be wondering whether some people know that what I am talking about is true or not.(haha)
Even if someone thinks that they know a whole lot about their topic, that should not stop them from going out and doing some research. It's actually pretty cool when you find something out that you did not know. :)

Discussion Week 4.1 Research Interviews

I have never personally had any experience with conducting research interviews but I
got somewhat close to it, so I think. This one time last year, for my (MUSE)U.S. Music Modern class I had an assignment in which we had to interview an elder or a person over the age of 45. The purpose of the interview was to find out information on what older people thought about the music of their time and to also find out what kind of music was inappropriate and what they think of today's music. I interviewed my dad for this assignment. Before interviewing him, I made a list of questions for my dad to talk about.I recorded him and played it back when it was time to write my paper. The good thing was that my dad was able to answer all of my questions, but one thing that was didn't turn out so was the fact that he did not quite understand what I meant by the questions. I guess my questions were a little too open ended just as discussed in chapter 6. I was not quite prepared to interview him because I did it last minute so I was not able to get as much information as possible.

Week 3: Discussion#2 (Speech Buddies)

In the first video, Janine suggest that for us to go somewhere quiet where we can practice speaking; afterall, a quiet environment allows the speaker to be more focused and concentrate on what will go right during your presentation and what will go wrong. In the videos, Janine suggests for the speaker to do some simple breathing excersises which will calm one down. I think the excersises are going to be extremely useful throughout this semester.

In video 2.2 , both Janine and Anthony discuss their fears and how every speaker should go visit the place where they are speaking at, they should adapt to it.

In the video,"Intro: Jessica," I noticed that Jessica had a strong introduction and conclusion, just like Anthony had suggested a speaker should always have. I think I am going to try and do that, that way, I will be able to get the audience interested in what I am talking about and not just have them with their eyes wandering around the room.

It's like this, if I were to meet Derek Jeter one day, if I were to be in a huge crowd of girls wanting to meet him, well, I would have to try and make a first good and interesting introduction. If he were to see that I am different then the other girls, well then there you go, he'l be interested. :)

Week 3: Discussion#1

Whenever I think about public speaking, I start
to feel very apprehensive, in other words, I'm fearful that
something unpleasant will occur. I always think about
what the audience will think about me. Last semester I was
enrolled in Comm20, but I dropped out of it because my
apprehensiveness had taken over. But during my first
week in the class, I learned that while a person is thinking
about what the audience is thinking or saying about them,
in reality, they aren't. The audience is most likely as nervous as the
speaker is. In addition, I always think that my speeches come out a little
short and not as long as they really should be because
I tend to speak a bit faster when speaking in front of a large audience.
I am always scared that the audience will be making fun of me
if I say the wrong thing or move too much.

Chapter 2 talks about the sources of speech anxiety. These sources
are the following: the uncertainty about your role as a speaker,
your speaking abilities, your ideas, the setting, the audience's response, etc.
All of the above things stated make me extremely apprehensive when it
comes to speeches.

Introduction

Hey there!! :)
Well my alias name is mz.jeter, the name says it all. This is my first year at San Jose
State University, I am originally from Soledad which is not so far from SJSU. Even though I am not far away away from home, the transition from living at home and living in the dorms has been difficult for me because it is a total different environment. Academic wise,I enjoy my classes but I think what makes college difficult is the lack in self disipline. When people do not have self disipline then it is hard to maintain good grades. I have struggled with that because it is from going to an enviroment with teachers, parents, and mentors always being there for you and pushing you to study,to being by myself and getting myself to do work. When it comes to public speaking,I have very little experience and do not feel comfortable with it but I am looking to improve it. My shy side always dominates and that is when I begin to feel uncomfortable being in front of people. I hope to overcome my shyness and be able to speak in front of anyone. :)

P.S- I have this obsession with baseball. I pretty much love everything about it,
especially Derek Jeter, the shortstop for the New York Yankees. He plays awesome, and best of all, looks awesome in his uniform. :)
